Sewage Backup Cleanup

A backup through a floor drain, tub or toilet is a health hazard rather than a mess. An independent provider removes contaminated water and materials under containment, disinfects the area and dries the structure of Cypress properties.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop running water anywhere in the building, appliances included
  • Keep children and pets out of the affected rooms
  • Wear gloves and closed shoes if you must pass through
  • Leave the air conditioning off so nothing is drawn into the ducts
  • Do not pour drain chemicals into a line that is already backing up

Sewage carries bacteria, it soaks into porous materials within minutes and the smell is the least of the problem. Nothing needs to be cleaned before a provider arrives; photographs from the doorway are more useful than a mop.

What the Service Includes

Contaminated water work is done in a set order, with the affected area separated from the rest of the building throughout. Ask the provider to explain each stage before it starts.

Containment first

The affected rooms are sealed off and negative air is used so contaminated air does not drift into clean parts of the building. Crews work in protective equipment, and the route in and out is set up to avoid tracking material through the house.

Removal and disinfection

Contaminated water is extracted, and porous materials that absorbed it come out: carpet and pad, affected drywall, insulation and cabinet bases. Hard surfaces, framing and slab are then cleaned and treated with an antimicrobial product.

Drying and rebuild

Once the area is clean, air movers and dehumidifiers dry the structure to measured readings, and the materials that were removed are replaced. Everything removed is documented for your records and your insurer.

Why Backups Happen Here

Older neighborhoods around Cypress and Jersey Village still have long runs of original drain line with mature tree roots in the yards above them, and roots follow any joint that is already weeping. Heavy rain is the other trigger: when the ground is saturated and the system is full, the lowest fixture in the house is where it comes back up, which is usually a downstairs tub or a garage floor drain.

After the contaminated material is out, the job moves into structural drying, and where damp has already been sitting for a while see mold remediation after water damage. If the backup came with a storm, storm and flood cleanup covers the rest of it.

Referrals cover Cypress, Tomball and every one of our service areas.

Sewage Cleanup Questions

Can I clean up a small sewage backup myself?

A few drops on a tile floor, wiped with disinfectant and gloves on, is manageable. Anything that reached carpet, drywall or cabinet bases is not, because the contamination is inside the material rather than on it. Household cleaners on the surface do not make the material safe again.

What does sewage cleanup cost?

The drivers are how far the water spread, how much porous material has to be removed and replaced, and how much containment and protective equipment the job needs. A single bathroom is a different job from a backup that ran down a hallway. Ask the independent provider to quote it once the area has been assessed.

Do the affected carpets really have to go?

Carpet pad always goes, and carpet that sat in sewage nearly always does too. It absorbs contaminated water down into the backing, and cleaning the surface does not reach it. Hard flooring, framing and slab can usually be cleaned, disinfected and kept, which is where the restore versus replace comparison helps.

How long before the room is usable again?

Removal and disinfection are often done in a day or two on a single room. Drying the structure underneath takes several more days, and the rebuild follows that. Ask the provider for the sequence on the first visit so you can plan around the rooms that are out of use.
